Carl West is a British abstract artist who paints the colour, light and movement of water.
The story
Carl West works in acrylic on canvas, building each painting up in generous layers of texture. Rather than copying a scene exactly, he paints the feeling of it — the surge of a breaking wave, the warmth of a calm evening, the way light scatters across shallow tropical water.
Texture is central to everything. Using a palette knife and all parts of the brush, he creates surfaces that catch the light and shift as you move around them. Many pieces are finished with a gloss or sheen, so a painting can look quite different in morning light than it does at dusk.
Inspiration
The Cornish coast is a constant. Fistral Beach, with its powerful surf, and Watergate Bay — where Carl proposed to his wife, and still a favourite family spot — appear again and again in the work, from the fury of Breaking Waves to the stillness of Shepherd's Delight.
Travels abroad bring other moods of water: the gentle, inviting turquoise of Cuba, the deep red sunsets of Thailand, and the clear green shallows of the Whitsunday Islands in Australia. Even away from the shore, the same eye for texture turns to nature — the vivid green leaves and curious geckos of the Textured & Nature collection.
